Phytonutrients have been used as one of the major ingredients in some nutritional supplements available in the market today. One of these is Optimals, one of the nutritional supplements of Ariix, the global leader in the health and wellness industry, under its Nutrifii brand.
But what are phytonutrients?
Phytonutrients (“phyto” means plant in Greek) are compounds or chemicals that are naturally found in plant food, which help protect the body against infections and diseases and keep all the organs in the body working properly.
Fruits, vegetables and legumes contain thousands of phytonutrients. But there are also plant-based food that contains these chemicals like tea, nuts, whole grains and beans.
There are more than 25,000 phytonutrients found in plant foods. Some of these include flavonoids, phytoestrogens, carotenoids, ellagic acid, resveratrol and glucosinolates.
Flavonoids and phytonutrients are awesome combination
Flavonoids are the most common as most phytonutrients fall into this category. Among the common types of flavonoids are catechins, which can be found in green tea; hesperidin, which are abundant in citrus fruits; and flavonols particularly quercetin, which is abundant in some fruits like kale, berry and apple and some spices like onion and garlic.
Hesperidin works as an antioxidant that helps reduce inflammation and prevent chronic diseases while flavonols helps reduce the risk of getting coronary heart diseases and asthma and certain types of cancer.
Aside from Flavonoids, another common phytonutrient is carotenoid, which is responsible for the reddish, yellowish and orange colors in fruits and vegetables.
There are more than 600 carotenoids found in some fruits and vegetables, which act as antioxidants that protect the body against free radicals.
Among the types of carotenoids are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, which are converted by the body into vitamin A. We all know that vitamin A is very important to the eyes.
Among the best sources of beta-carotene and alpha-carotene are yellow and orange vegetables, particularly carrots.
Lycopene is also commonly being mentioned by some health experts, which has been linked to tomatoes. Yes, tomatoes contain lycopene, a kind of phytonutrient under the glucosinolates type. But lycopene is also present in watermelon and pink grapefruit. This is the chemical that gives the red or pink color to these fruits.
As a whole, phytonutrients have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that’s why they are commonly added as ingredients in some nutritional supplements.
Phytonutrients have dozens of benefits but it would be impossible for people to eat all the fruits and vegetables that contain these chemicals. Fortunately, they can have it all in just one product, Optimals.
Optimals comes in two forms – Optimal-V and Optimal-M.
