Vitamins and minerals
Vitamins and minerals play an important role on people’s health. Without proper intake of the needed vitamins and minerals, a person will have low resistance and can get diseases and illnesses later in life.
Although there are people who, by nature, have strong immune system, intake of supplements, particularly vitamins and minerals, is still necessary to make the body extra strong against certain kinds of diseases.
Vitamins and minerals all have different effects in the human body but all these boil down to one thing – to increase a person’s resistance and combat infections, if there are.
The vitamins and minerals in the body are substantial but one thing is important — they work together to repair, heal, grow and maintain the body’s organs, tissues, cells and the overall human system.
One particular function that they do is its role in digestion and metabolism.
Metabolism is the burning of the food ingested and are then stored as nutrients, giving energy to a person. One mineral that plays an important role in energy metabolism is magnesium.
In addition to magnesium, other important minerals that the body need are calcium, iron, phosphorous, zinc and selenium, among others.
There are different kinds of vitamins that the body need such as vitamin A, B, C, D, K and E.
Vitamin A is particularly needed for good eyesight. Among the good sources of vitamin A are orange and green vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin; dairy products like milk; eggs; liver; and fruits like peaches, papaya, cantaloupe, mangoes and apricots.
Vitamin B comes in many forms such as B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 and B12. All the forms of vitamin B play a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. But in particular, vitamin B2 is important in the formation of coenzyme or the combination of oxygen and cellular mechanisms to produce energy while vitamin B3 works to lower “bad” cholesterol levels thereby improving cardiovascular health. Among the food sources of vitamin B are eggs and other poultry products, oats, spinach, fish, beans and broccoli.
Vitamin D is often referred to as the “natural” vitamin because it is made in the skin when a person exposes himself to sunlight. But there are also certain kinds of food that are good sources of vitamin D. This vitamins and minerals help the body absorb calcium.
More on vitamins and minerals
Meanwhile, vitamin E protects the body’s cells and tissues from damage while vitamin K is important in maintaining healthy bones by supporting the roles of both vitamin D and calcium.
Vitamins A, C and E along with beta carotene are rich in antioxidant properties, which work to reduce the risk of heart disease because they help reduce inflammation.
Both are needed to maintain bone health and prevent diseases of the bones like osteoporosis. The bones are composed of minerals particularly calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. But as mentioned, vitamin D is needed by the body in order for calcium to be completely absorbed.
One mineral that is also very important in the body is iron because it transports oxygen from the lungs toward the rest of the body.
The benefits of vitamins and minerals are so huge that people should really include them in their diet.
